Official Statement from Mormon Women for Ethical Government in Response to the Supreme Court’s 5-4 Decision to Uphold Travel Ban
June 26, 2018 As members of Mormon Women for Ethical Government, we are deeply disappointed and dismayed at todayâs Supreme Court ruling upholding the latest iteration of the Trump administrationâs travel ban. We believe there are multiple factors that make this travel ban unprecedented, and we cannot discount or ignore the greater context in which the ban was issued. Therefore, we feel we must take this opportunity to speak out against any policies or practices rooted in animus towards Muslims. Godâs parenthood of all humankind makes us literal sisters and brothers. We are one family. As Russell M. Nelson, our current living prophet, said only recently, âThat understanding inspires us…

Official Statement from Mormon Women for Ethical Government on the Separation of Children from Their Families at the Border
May 31, 2018 Under the direction of the White House, the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security are engaged in the unconscionable practice of separating children from their parents at the border in a horrific and misguided effort to discourage immigration. Many of these families are refugees who are fleeing unspeakable horrors in their home countries and are seeking asylum in the United States. As members of Mormon Women for Ethical Government we join with other individuals and groups from all across the political spectrum to unequivocally denounce this practice as cruel, inhumane, and entirely indefensible. Our democracy is founded on principles of honor, justice, and an absolute respect for…

Families Can Be Together Forever; Families Should Be Together Now
May 15, 2018 Today is International Day of Families, and here at Mormon Women for Ethical Government we believe families can be together forever. We also believe families should be together NOW. For this reason, we are choosing to stand in solidarity with mothers, fathers, and children who are at risk of forced separation from cruel and unjust measures currently being pursued by Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen at our borders. Join us as we plead with her to put an end to family separations. #KeepFamiliesTogether #EndFamilySeparation #mormonweg Send your letter or email to: The Honorable Kirstjen M. Mother’s Day Call to Action: Immigration
May 11, 2018 Please join us in sending Mother’s Day cards to DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen pleading with her (in true MWEG fashion consistent with our Principles of Peacemaking) to stop unnecessarily separating mothers and children at the border. Our op-ed in the Deseret News last week explained how the Department of Health and Human Services recently confirmed that, since October 2017, it has taken custody of more than 700 children at the U.S. border, including more than 100 children under the age of 4. (https://www.deseretnews.com/article/900017735/op-ed-breaking-up-families-is-antithetical-to-us-ideals.html) DHS claims to be merely doing its duty to protect children, but such motives are called into question by the fact that many of…

Official Statement from Mormon Women for Ethical Government with Regard to Continuing Negotiations on Protections for DREAMers
Feb. 15, 2018 As members of both houses of Congress continue to debate and negotiate a resolution for DREAMers this week, we call upon them to work toward ethical solutions that focus on the interests and needs of the American people rather than the tempting pull of partisan politics. The White House has consistently made its anti-immigrant agenda clear, and it continues to derail any bipartisan solutions that do not further that agenda. The result, so far, is a series of proposals that are beneath us and do not honor our country’s values or history. Fortunately, our American political system is one of checks and balances. It is time for…

Official Statement from Mormon Women for Ethical Government with Regard to the Silencing, Denigration, and Abuse of Women
Feburary 8, 2018 As Mormon Women for Ethical Government, we assert without equivocation that the silencing, denigration, and abuse of women are heinous offenses which must never be condoned or ignored. Our former prophet, President Gordon B. Hinckley stated: âWe condemn most strongly abusive behavior in any form. No man who abuses his wife or children is worthy to be a member in good standing in this Church. The abuse of oneâs spouse and children is a most serious offense before God.â We stand with all women and hold in the highest regard those who seek help or counsel when they are being harmed in any way. These women must…
