Official Statement from Mormon Women for Ethical Government in Response to the Senate Judiciary Committee Vote on Judge Kavanaugh
September 28, 2018 We are deeply grateful to Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) for his willingness to insist upon further investigation before confirming Judge Kavanaugh. We hope that such investigation will be embraced by Senate leadership in order to address the doubt Senator Flake spoke of yesterday. If Judge Kavanaugh is confirmed without that additional process, that doubt will linger over both him and the legitimacy of the Supreme Court for the duration of his tenure. If he is innocent of these charges, then he, more than anyone, should want this investigation to take place so that his name can be cleared. In the meantime, we continue to urge all senators…

Official Statement From Mormon Women for Ethical Government in Response to Todayâs Testimonies from Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Judge Brett Kavanaugh
September 27, 2018 Today we heard two credible witnesses offer contradictory testimonies. In his final remarks, Senate Judiciary Committee member Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) said the following: âThe process is imperfect, but it’s the best the Judiciary Committee can do. . . . In the end there is likely to be as much doubt as certainty going out of this room today.” The Judiciary Committee can, in fact, do better. They are the body charged with determining the fitness of a nominee, and this is within their power. We continue to maintain that an independent investigation must explore these very serious allegations levied against Judge Brett Kavanaugh. Committee member Senator…

Official Statement From Mormon Women for Ethical Government With Regard to the Brett Kavanaugh Confirmation Proceedings
September 24, 2018 Given the seriousness of the allegations levied against Judge Kavanaugh, we call upon the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee to immediately suspend the confirmation proceedings until a thorough independent investigation can be conducted. We very specifically urge the four members of the committee who share our faith as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints–Senator Hatch, Senator Lee, Senator Flake, and Senator Crapo–to ensure that these charges be taken seriously and that every attempt be made to ascertain the truth of the situation. Our mutual faith teaches that any sexual abuse or assault in any context is contemptible and worthy of the most…

MWEG Op-Ed: “An Open Letter to Sen. Mike Lee”
“We have been following the Senate hearings for Judge Brett Kavanaugh and recently watched the video of Sen. Kamala Harris questioning Judge Kavanaugh as to whether he had discussed the ongoing Mueller investigation with anyone associated with the law firm headed by President Trumpâs personal lawyer, Marc Kasowitz. As Judge Kavanaugh danced around and avoided the question, you interrupted to say that it was unrealistic to expect him to know all the different lawyers in the Washington, D.C. area. Your statement may be plausible, but we were extremely frustrated you seemed interested in allowing this very important question to go unanswered by Judge Kavanaugh.” Click here for the full text…

MWEG Opinion: “An Open Letter to Sen. Hatch”
“As an organization of over 6,000 women, many of whom are your constituents, share your faith, and have worked closely with you and your staff, we are dismayed at your continued defense of things that are fundamentally indefensible. Knowing that you aspire to be a man of honor, we are puzzled by your frequent wresting of truth and logic as you excuse our current administration.” Click here for the full text of this Salt Lake Tribune opinion piece written by Mormon Women for Ethical Government.

Official Statement from Mormon Women for Ethical Government on Voter Engagement and the Need to Measure Bills and Initiatives through Ethical Standards
August 24, 2018 Mormon Women for Ethical Government believes that one of the basic requirements for a healthy democracy is an informed and involved citizenry. A large part of our mission involves voter education and engagement. We believe that constituents should be informed and should work hard to understand, not just candidates and issues, but also proposed legislation. Bills and initiatives should be carefully examined and measured against broadly accepted ethical principles. Good legislation is clear, specific, based on verifiable, objective facts, and free from the taint of money from lobbyists or other special interest groups. Ideally, legislation is the result of bipartisan cooperation and compromise. Bills and initiatives may…
