Official Statement by Mormon Women for Ethical Government on Environmental Stewardship and Climate Change

October 19, 2018 The recently released report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) highlights the deleterious effects of global climate change. The consequences of maintaining the status quo of carbon emissions and the resulting rate of global temperature change are dire and include major shifts in patterns of weather, fire, and hydrology; large-scale impacts on biodiversity; and disruption to human systems, including agriculture and food supplies, migration, national security, and economies. According to the IPCC, “there is no documented historical precedent” for the worldwide changes required to avoid these dramatic consequences. Two days after this report was released, Elder Steven E. Snow, historian and recorder for The Church…

Mormon Women for Ethical Government Promotes Voter Registration, Education, and Turnout Ahead of Midterm Elections

Mormon Women for Ethical Government (MWEG) engaged intensively in the Kavanaugh confirmation battle out of our desire to protect the legitimacy of the Supreme Court and because of our conviction that sexual assault allegations should be taken seriously and investigated thoroughly. As a nonpartisan group, we are united in concern that public trust in our civic institutions is harmed by bitter and divisive partisanship. (Our final statement on the Supreme Court confirmation proceedings can be found here.) In concrete terms, MWEG is channeling the emotions experienced during the Supreme Court confirmation proceedings toward a full-court press for voter registration, education, and turnout ahead of the midterm elections. MWEG members across the…

Some Final Thoughts About the Recent Supreme Court Confirmation Proceedings

October 8, 2018 The past few weeks leading up to Saturday’s Supreme Court confirmation vote have been difficult ones for America. In an effort to score a political win, politicians on both sides gambled with the trust of the American people, and the result is that we all lost. We watched in real time while hyper-partisanship dealt a serious blow to one of our most sacred democratic institutions. Some have asked why MWEG engaged so publicly in this particular battle. We did not see this as a contest between Republicans and Democrats or between conservatism or liberalism. We reject the notion that every engagement in the civic sphere must necessarily…

Official Statement from Mormon Women for Ethical Government Before the Vote on the Confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh as a Justice to the Supreme Court

October 4, 2018 As the Senate prepares to vote on the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, we implore its members to carefully weigh the totality of factors involved in this confirmation process. Those factors include not only the actions and character of Judge Kavanaugh but also the damage that a compromised process will do to our collective faith in our institutions. At risk is the legitimacy of the Supreme Court, the civic health of our country, and the confidence of sexual assault victims that they will receive equal justice under the law. The members of the Senate are now tasked with the solemn duty of fairly…

    Host a Voter Preparation Party!

While the news cycle continues its dizzying course, let’s not be distracted from one of our primary purposes here at MWEG — to make sure we are doing all we can to encourage the citizens of this great country to be informed, to be engaged, and to exercise that most basic of all rights/responsibilities in a government of, by, and for the people — the right to vote! We are eager to proactively follow the counsel from the First Presidency to all members of the Church “to be active citizens by registering, exercising [your] right to vote, and engaging in civic affairs….” and to “spend the time needed to become…
