Official Statement from Mormon Women for Ethical Government on the Results of the 2020 Election
Over the last few weeks a record number of Americans demonstrated, simply by casting a vote, that they value their democracy and its institutions. Those votes have largely been counted, and we now join our fellow Americans in thanking the local and state officials, countless volunteers, and dedicated poll watchers whose commitment to long-established processes has delivered a trustworthy result.
Our nation has elected a new president, and we wish him well. We have also elected our first female vice president, a mark of progress that gives the women of America new visions of their possibilities. That she is a Black, Asian American woman further paves the way for new voices and perspectives to take their place at the heart of our political conversations.
While the contest for the presidency drew international attention, the election also offered our citizens the opportunity to select thousands of federal, state, and local leaders who will directly impact lives and communities. Our system is stronger when we have broad representation at all levels, and it will only improve if we each continue to engage with our elected officials, always holding them to the highest standards.
The women of MWEG maintain an unbridled faith in the promises of this nation and the moral capacity of its citizens. We have great hope for our future and believe our mistakes are not permanent or irredeemable. We also believe that if we seek truth and knowledge, earnestly commit to our founding principles, and act in good faith, together we can build on this renewed enthusiasm for self-governance. We ask that our leaders adopt a spirit of collaboration and compromise and reject the corrupted notion that victory in a democracy carries with it the power to control and command.
Regardless of which individuals and parties hold power, Mormon Women for Ethical Government will continue to encourage citizens to become informed and principled advocates for ethical government. We promise to do this work with strength, courage, and a commitment to peacemaking. We love our country, and we love our fellow citizens. We are eager to continue the work of achieving America’s promise for all our sisters and brothers.
