January 2020 Full and Fair Trial Events in Utah
Last week, MWEG helped organize a cross-partisan coalition to advocate for a full and fair impeachment trial in the Senate. A prayer breakfast, news conference, and rally on Thursday in Salt Lake City, Utah, provided an opportunity to join our voice with others to pressure our elected officials to uncover truth, as is sought by the majority of American voters. The words spoken by our members at those events are deeply relevant to this moment in our history so we have shared the full text of each speech here.
Prayer Breakfast: “(W)e also call upon fellow Utahns to view the actions and words of our elected officials involved in the impeachment trial through the lens of the three R’s we have described here today…. The impeachment process is a lawful one, set forth in the Constitution by the Founders. In their wisdom and fear, they included impeachment as a stopgap against those that would willingly co-opt the very institutions put in place to protect the individual voice of the electorate. They recognized the importance of safeguarding the trust of the people in the electoral process as well as the sanctity and power of the individual vote. It is now the responsibility of Senators Lee and Romney to … ‘preserve, unawed and uninfluenced, the necessary impartiality between an individual accused, and the representatives of the people, his accusers.’ To do anything less would be a violation of their oaths.”
The Press Conference: ”People often ask why MWEG continues to advocate so forcefully for a full and fair impeachment trial. They are surprised that this particular group of women would be so bold. We do this because, in this destructive partisan climate, we believe that the only way to heal our nation is to uncover truth and start building consensus around it. We believe truth is both discernible and powerful — feared only by those leaders who seek to sustain control through misinformation and obfuscation.”
The Rally: ”The overwhelming evidence brought to light in recent investigative efforts regarding our president, including documents, witness statements, and even today’s decision from the Government Accountability Office, do not afford us the luxury of staying silent: we urge and insist that our senators make every effort to ensure a full and fair impeachment trial in order to uncover the truth. We are compelled to amplify our voices and the voices of any who will join us in this effort, and to this end, we have created a website, WeWitness.us, dedicated to this purpose. You will find there a selection of the hundreds of letters from individuals in 42 states submitted to us, calling for a full and fair trial. To date, we have hand-delivered over one thousand of these letters to members of Congress.”
