Official Statement From Mormon Women for Ethical Government on the Joint Resolution in Response to the President’s Declaration of National Emergency

February 26, 2019 This week, members of Congress will vote on a joint resolution to terminate President Trump’s declaration of national emergency that would allow him to reallocate government resources to build a wall on the southern border–a wall that Congress voted not to fund. Congress must pass this joint resolution in order to fulfill its duty to act as a necessary check on the executive branch of our government. If Congress abdicates its responsibility to oversee our government’s purse strings, whether out of political expediency, misplaced loyalty, or fear of potential political fallout, our entire inspired system of checks and balances will be seriously threatened. Our elected representatives in Congress…

Official Statement from Mormon Women for Ethical Government on Continuing Government Shutdown

January 24, 2019 This afternoon, the Senate failed to pass a continuing resolution that would have ended the government shutdown and given Congress two weeks to come to a compromise on border security and immigration reform. It is unconscionable for Congress to allow hundreds of thousands of federal workers and their families to continue to suffer because of a purely political crisis. We have been praying for our leaders to have wisdom and humility, and we have persistently contacted their offices to ask that they bring an end to this unnecessary shutdown. We are especially grateful to Senator Lamar Alexander, Senator Susan Collins, Senator Cory Gardner, Senator Johnny Isakson, Senator Lisa Murkowski, and Senator Mitt…

Official Statement from Mormon Women for Ethical Government on New Revelations About the Separation of Children from Their Families at the Border

January 17, 2019 This morning the Office of Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released a report indicating that “thousands” more children had been taken away from their families and guardians at the border than previously reported. This news is horrifying and completely unacceptable. It underscores the inescapable moral responsibility that we have as a nation to fix our broken immigration system. This kind of thingā€”the separation of children from their familiesā€”must never again happen on American soil. We echo the statement from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints asserting that “immigration reform should strengthen families and keep them together. The forced separation…

Urgent Call to Action: Yemen Famine

November 28, 2018 There is something we can all do TODAY that could help prevent millions of people from starving to death. Right now, it is estimated that 130 children per day are dying in Yemen. We need both divine intervention and the immediate action of citizens and legislators to fix this. The Senate is scheduled to vote on a bipartisan resolution this week that would end U.S. backing of the Saudi-led war that is causing the conditions. So far, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, and Finland have all acted. The U.S. needs to join them immediately! Please do these things right now: 1) Pray right now for hearts to be softened, for…

Official Statement From Mormon Women for Ethical Government Regarding the Treatment of Those Seeking Refuge at the Southern Border

November 26, 2018 Yesterday, several groups of Central American migrants who had been traveling for weeks to seek asylum in the United States rushed the border near the San Ysidro Port of Entry in California. Both U.S. and international law protect the right of individuals to claim asylum at the border, but the Trump administration has been actively implementing policies to make that process more difficult. Despite the fact that the Department of Homeland Security has known for weeks that this caravan was on its way, these asylum-seekers were met not with compassionate and orderly assistance, but with military presence and threats to close the border permanently. In an attempt…
