March 15, 2019 Less than six months ago, we mourned the tragic deaths of our sisters and brothers of the Jewish faith whose lives were taken at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Today, our hearts are broken again by the loss of more of God’s children due to hatred and prejudice–our sisters and brothers of the Muslim faith in Christchurch, New Zealand. We are pained that we must repeat our same expression of deepest sorrow, anguish, and righteous indignation on behalf of those whose lives have been lost or threatened, as well as their families and loved ones. Official Statement From Mormon Women for Ethical Government on the Joint Resolution in Response to the President’s Declaration of National Emergency
February 26, 2019 This week, members of Congress will vote on a joint resolution to terminate President Trump’s declaration of national emergency that would allow him to reallocate government resources to build a wall on the southern border–a wall that Congress voted not to fund. Congress must pass this joint resolution in order to fulfill its duty to act as a necessary check on the executive branch of our government. If Congress abdicates its responsibility to oversee our government’s purse strings, whether out of political expediency, misplaced loyalty, or fear of potential political fallout, our entire inspired system of checks and balances will be seriously threatened. January 24, 2019 This afternoon, the Senate failed to pass a continuing resolution that would have ended the government shutdown and given Congress two weeks to come to a compromise on border security and immigration reform. It is unconscionable for Congress to allow hundreds of thousands of federal workers and their families to continue to suffer because of a purely political crisis. We have been praying for our leaders to have wisdom and humility, and we have persistently contacted their offices to ask that they bring an end to this unnecessary shutdown. January 17, 2019 This morning the Office of Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released a report indicating that “thousands” more children had been taken away from their families and guardians at the border than previously reported. This news is horrifying and completely unacceptable. It underscores the inescapable moral responsibility that we have as a nation to fix our broken immigration system.
