Official Statement From Mormon Women for Ethical Government on Unethical Policing Practices by the Woods Cross Police Department
June 7, 2019 Yesterday, in West Bountiful, Utah, a police officer who was involved in a multi-agency manhunt for two adult suspects stopped his vehicle and drew his firearm on a 10-year-old black child who was playing in his front yard. The officer ordered the child at gunpoint to get on the ground before determining that he did not fit the description of the suspects and quickly leaving without further explanation. The incident was witnessed in part by the child’s mother, who ran outside to the child’s defense. A lieutenant with the Woods Cross Police Department dismissed this as “an unfortunate situation” in which the boy was “in the wrong…

Official Statement from Mormon Women for Ethical Government in Response to the Supreme Court’s 5-4 Decision to Uphold Travel Ban
June 26, 2018 As members of Mormon Women for Ethical Government, we are deeply disappointed and dismayed at today’s Supreme Court ruling upholding the latest iteration of the Trump administration’s travel ban. We believe there are multiple factors that make this travel ban unprecedented, and we cannot discount or ignore the greater context in which the ban was issued. Therefore, we feel we must take this opportunity to speak out against any policies or practices rooted in animus towards Muslims. God’s parenthood of all humankind makes us literal sisters and brothers. We are one family. As Russell M. Nelson, our current living prophet, said only recently, “That understanding inspires us…

MWEG-Arizona Holds Vigil at the Border
Powerful moments at the Arizona vigil at the border wall. Participants were intently watched by border patrol agents the entire time, and the media turned up in force. One participant wrote: We had two television stations, two local newspapers, and a reporter from Buzzfeed. All stayed nearly the entire time. We sang, we prayed, and we shared our light – all with a backdrop of daily life in Mexico playing out behind us. As two children curiously watched us from the stoop of the bodega on the other side of the wall, I was moved by our common humanity. #familiesbelongtogether #MWEGvigil #arizona

Official Statement from Mormon Women for Ethical Government with Regard to Continuing Negotiations on Protections for DREAMers
Feb. 15, 2018 As members of both houses of Congress continue to debate and negotiate a resolution for DREAMers this week, we call upon them to work toward ethical solutions that focus on the interests and needs of the American people rather than the tempting pull of partisan politics. The White House has consistently made its anti-immigrant agenda clear, and it continues to derail any bipartisan solutions that do not further that agenda. The result, so far, is a series of proposals that are beneath us and do not honor our country’s values or history. Fortunately, our American political system is one of checks and balances. It is time for…

Fifteen Declarations on Ethical Immigration Policy
Mormon Women for Ethical Government is a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring women of faith to be ambassadors of peace who transcend partisanship and courageously advocate for ethical government. We are greatly disheartened by the current immigration situation in the United States. Immigration is a complex topic with many potential points of philosophical and practical debate. A balanced and civil approach to reform is desperately needed. These 15 declarations describe our vision of ethical immigration policy. They are in harmony with the Principles of Ethical Government (PEG), the foundation for our policy decisions: Immigration policy must respect political norms and procedures, uphold the human and civil rights of all people,…

Response from Mormon Women for Ethical Government to President Trump’s Crass and Racist Comments
January 12, 2018 President Trump’s recent comments about Haiti and several countries in Africa and Central America were indefensible–ugly, offensive, racist, and decidedly un-Presidential. We are heartened that so many people are speaking out against this untenable behavior, but we impatiently await the time when honorable members of Congress from both sides of the aisle will put aside politics, recognize what is at stake, and take decisive action to protect this country from a President who is so clearly unfit for office. # # # About MWEG: Founded in January 2017, Mormon Women for Ethical Government (MWEG) is a 501(c)4 nonpartisan grassroots organization dedicated to the ideals of decency, honor, accountability, transparency, and…
