MWEG Op-Ed: âWhy Gov. Cox Says We Donât Need to Disagree Less â We Need to Disagree Betterâ
“Recently, I attended a speech given to local high school students and community members by Gov. Spencer Cox as part of his Connecting Utah Tour. I am drawn to these kinds of events, both by my personal interest in all things government and by my desire to be an informed citizen. During his address, I noted two things: First, there is power in Coxâs relatable optimism â through his message, he managed to transform fear into hope. And second, by speaking with civility and positive energy, he demonstrated how to work in politics while respecting the dignity of others.” Click here for the full text of this Deseret News op-ed written…

MWEG Deep Dive Recap: Immigration Op-Ed Tutorial with FWD.us
For our inaugural Deep Dive event, MWEG hosted two communications professionals from FWD.us to talk about the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program â and how to advocate for it. FWD.us is a bipartisan organization working to fix the failed immigration and criminal justice systems that have locked too many out of the American dream for too long. In their presentation, Leezia Dhalia, immigration press director, and Alexis Sosa, communications fellow, shared the facts about DACA and why defending it is important. Leezia is a DACA recipient herself, having been brought to the U.S. from Canada as a pre-teen. DACA protects 750,000 young immigrants â Dreamers â who have…

Op-Eds: A Crash Course
Op-eds can be some of the most thought-provoking â and controversial â sections of news publications, both in print and online. Last month, MWEGâs media literacy team set out to clarify what op-eds are (you might be surprised what the âopâ stands for), how they can be useful (and not so useful), and why and how you can find your voice and write your own. What are op-eds? Many newspapers have an opinion section, which operates completely separately from the rest of the paper and which publishes âseveral different types of content in the spirit of presenting a wide range of viewpoints and to encourage thoughtful debateâ Des Moines Register).…

MWEG Op-Ed: “Who Is Defending Our Democracy?”
“Allowing foreign governments into our election process puts our democracy and our citizenry in danger. A foreign interest is always just that â foreign and not American. Our leaders must zealously guard our interests and democratic institutions. Our elected representatives are sworn to protect these institutions through rules of law and political norms. Very few are currently doing so. Thank you, Sen. Romney, for courageously defending our democracy. The electorate will remember those willing to protect it and us.” Click here for the full text of this Deseret News opinion piece written by MWEG leaders Lisa Rampton Halverson and Wendy Dennehy.

MWEG Op-Ed: “An Open Letter to Sen. Mike Lee”
“We have been following the Senate hearings for Judge Brett Kavanaugh and recently watched the video of Sen. Kamala Harris questioning Judge Kavanaugh as to whether he had discussed the ongoing Mueller investigation with anyone associated with the law firm headed by President Trumpâs personal lawyer, Marc Kasowitz. As Judge Kavanaugh danced around and avoided the question, you interrupted to say that it was unrealistic to expect him to know all the different lawyers in the Washington, D.C. area. Your statement may be plausible, but we were extremely frustrated you seemed interested in allowing this very important question to go unanswered by Judge Kavanaugh.” Click here for the full text…

MWEG Opinion: “An Open Letter to Sen. Hatch”
“As an organization of over 6,000 women, many of whom are your constituents, share your faith, and have worked closely with you and your staff, we are dismayed at your continued defense of things that are fundamentally indefensible. Knowing that you aspire to be a man of honor, we are puzzled by your frequent wresting of truth and logic as you excuse our current administration.” Click here for the full text of this Salt Lake Tribune opinion piece written by Mormon Women for Ethical Government.
