Urgent Call to Action: Yemen Famine

November 28, 2018 There is something we can all do TODAY that could help prevent millions of people from starving to death. Right now, it is estimated that 130 children per day are dying in Yemen. We need both divine intervention and the immediate action of citizens and legislators to fix this. The Senate is scheduled to vote on a bipartisan resolution this week that would end U.S. backing of the Saudi-led war that is causing the conditions. So far, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, and Finland have all acted. The U.S. needs to join them immediately! Please do these things right now: 1) Pray right now for hearts to be softened, for…

Official Statement from Mormon Women for Ethical Government in Response to the Forced Resignation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions

November 9, 2018 In view of the forced resignation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the subsequent appointment of acting Attorney General Matthew J. Whitaker, we must once again insist that our leaders put politics aside and make every effort to safeguard the investigation being conducted by Special Counsel Robert Mueller. The legitimacy of the executive branch depends upon it. While acknowledging that there are unanswered questions about the legality of the appointment of Acting Attorney General Whitaker, we urge him in the interim to uphold all laws, regulations, policies, and long-standing procedural norms to ensure that Special Counsel Mueller is able to fully and effectively complete his investigation regarding…

Official Statement From Mormon Women for Ethical Government on the 2018 Midterm Elections

November 7, 2018 Even as final numbers continue to be tallied in some key races, we celebrate record-breaking voter participation in this midterm election and the historic election of more than 100 women to Congress. We are elated by the number of women who broke major barriers to become the first women of their race, ethnicity, religion, or age to have the opportunity to serve in Congress or state offices, and we are eager to support and work with them in creating a more productive, less partisan, more inclusive, and more egalitarian culture in Washington. The marked rise in civic engagement and voter participation across the country and among most…

Official Statement From Mormon Women for Ethical Government Condemning Reckless Rhetoric and Hate-Fueled Violence

October 27, 2018 Yet again, the United States of America has been wounded by the tragic deaths of some of God’s children because of blatant hatred and prejudice. Our hearts are broken over today’s mass shooting at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania’s Tree of Life Synagogue and Wednesday’s targeting of a black church and subsequent killing of two black senior citizens at a grocery store in Jeffersontown City, Kentucky. Additionally, a number of prominent Democrats were threatened this week by hate-filled political violence in the form of pipe bombs which, fortunately, was prevented by the good work of those tasked with protecting our country’s political leaders. We express our deepest sorrow, anguish, and…

Official Statement by Mormon Women for Ethical Government on Environmental Stewardship and Climate Change

October 19, 2018 The recently released report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) highlights the deleterious effects of global climate change. The consequences of maintaining the status quo of carbon emissions and the resulting rate of global temperature change are dire and include major shifts in patterns of weather, fire, and hydrology; large-scale impacts on biodiversity; and disruption to human systems, including agriculture and food supplies, migration, national security, and economies. According to the IPCC, “there is no documented historical precedent” for the worldwide changes required to avoid these dramatic consequences. Two days after this report was released, Elder Steven E. Snow, historian and recorder for The Church…

Mormon Women for Ethical Government Promotes Voter Registration, Education, and Turnout Ahead of Midterm Elections

Mormon Women for Ethical Government (MWEG) engaged intensively in the Kavanaugh confirmation battle out of our desire to protect the legitimacy of the Supreme Court and because of our conviction that sexual assault allegations should be taken seriously and investigated thoroughly. As a nonpartisan group, we are united in concern that public trust in our civic institutions is harmed by bitter and divisive partisanship. (Our final statement on the Supreme Court confirmation proceedings can be found here.) In concrete terms, MWEG is channeling the emotions experienced during the Supreme Court confirmation proceedings toward a full-court press for voter registration, education, and turnout ahead of the midterm elections. MWEG members across the…
