Mormon Women for Ethical Government (MWEG) engaged intensively in the Kavanaugh confirmation battle out of our desire to protect the legitimacy of the Supreme Court and because of our conviction that sexual assault allegations should be taken seriously and investigated thoroughly. As a nonpartisan group, we are united in concern that public trust in our civic institutions is harmed by bitter and divisive partisanship. October 8, 2018 The past few weeks leading up to Saturday’s Supreme Court confirmation vote have been difficult ones for America. In an effort to score a political win, politicians on both sides gambled with the trust of the American people, and the result is that we all lost. We watched in real time while hyper-partisanship dealt a serious blow to one of our most sacred democratic institutions. Some have asked why MWEG engaged so publicly in this particular battle. September 28, 2018 We are deeply grateful to Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) for his willingness to insist upon further investigation before confirming Judge Kavanaugh. We hope that such investigation will be embraced by Senate leadership in order to address the doubt Senator Flake spoke of yesterday. If Judge Kavanaugh is confirmed without that additional process, that doubt will linger over both him and the legitimacy of the Supreme Court for the duration of his tenure. September 27, 2018 Today we heard two credible witnesses offer contradictory testimonies. In his final remarks, Senate Judiciary Committee member Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) said the following: “The process is imperfect, but it’s the best the Judiciary Committee can do. . . . In the end there is likely to be as much doubt as certainty going out of this room today.” The Judiciary Committee can, in fact, do better. They are the body charged with determining the fitness of a nominee, and this is within their power.
