Call to Action: Support Dreamers and Pass the Dream Act of 2021

UPDATE: On July 16, 2021, a federal judge ruled that accepting new DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) applications is illegal. While this does not change the status of current DACA recipients, it does bar new applicants, emphasizing the need for legislative action. The House passed the Dream Act, but the bill is currently held up in the Senate. We need to continue to encourage our senators to work together to find a legislative solution to ensure Dreamers are protected from deportation and are provided a reasonable pathway to permanent status. The American Dream and Promise Act of 2021 is a bipartisan bill that would provide permanent protection and a…

The Supreme Court’s Ruling on DACA: Adherence to Process Matters in the Law

The Supreme Court ruled on June 18 that the president did not end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) in a lawful manner. This ruling does not permanently protect the DACA program, as the main point in the ruling is that the president did not follow the proper legal process to end DACA. In short, adhering to correct processes matters. While the decision is good news for Dreamers and the majority of Americans who support DACA, the struggle is not at an end. The office of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has indicated the president will continue his attempts to rescind DACA, this time attempting to do so with…

MWEG Deep Dive Recap: Immigration Op-Ed Tutorial with FWD.us

For our inaugural Deep Dive event, MWEG hosted two communications professionals from FWD.us to talk about the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program — and how to advocate for it. FWD.us is a bipartisan organization working to fix the failed immigration and criminal justice systems that have locked too many out of the American dream for too long. In their presentation, Leezia Dhalia, immigration press director, and Alexis Sosa, communications fellow, shared the facts about DACA and why defending it is important. Leezia is a DACA recipient herself, having been brought to the U.S. from Canada as a pre-teen. DACA protects 750,000 young immigrants — Dreamers — who have…

An Open Letter to Mitt Romney

March 28, 2018 Dear Mitt Romney, We represent the Mormon Women for Ethical Government, a large and growing nonpartisan nonprofit organization dedicated to the ideals of decency, honor, accountability, transparency and justice in governing. A large percentage of our members live in Utah and would be your constituents if you were elected to replace Orrin Hatch in the United States Senate. Many of our members have supported you in the past and believe you to be a man of high moral integrity, wise judgment and firm principles. That is why we were so disheartened to read about your remarks on Monday to a gathering of Utah County Republican women in…

MWEG Immigration Leads Travel to Washington, D.C. to Meet with Senators and Representatives

“We have worked hard and long to push for ethical, fair, and compassionate immigration reform in our country. Our members of Congress have had months to come up with a legislative solution that would provide protection to DREAMers, and they have failed to get it done. The March 5th deadline is now mere days away. Many have given up all hope. But we have not. Our immigration committee is working tirelessly behind the scenes on something that we hope might spur some of the more principled of our elected representatives into action. But it may take divine intervention. And so that’s what we are asking for. And we ask you…

Official Statement from Mormon Women for Ethical Government with Regard to Continuing Negotiations on Protections for DREAMers

Feb. 15, 2018 As members of both houses of Congress continue to debate and negotiate a resolution for DREAMers this week, we call upon them to work toward ethical solutions that focus on the interests and needs of the American people rather than the tempting pull of partisan politics. The White House has consistently made its anti-immigrant agenda clear, and it continues to derail any bipartisan solutions that do not further that agenda. The result, so far, is a series of proposals that are beneath us and do not honor our country’s values or history. Fortunately, our American political system is one of checks and balances. It is time for…
