Official Statement on the Upcoming Election
The United States of America has a storied history of self-governance. The once-radical idea that “we the people” can select our own government representatives is empowering. For nearly 250 years, our remarkable democratic republic has persisted and continued to align itself more closely with these ideals.
What does a “government of the people, by the people, for the people” mean? It means citizens can choose what we want our government to look like. We have the opportunity to elect officials who will reflect the values we hold dear. Through our votes, we choose the political environment of our nation.
In recent years, a subset of our elected officials and candidates for office have promoted the falsehood that our election system cannot be trusted. There is no evidence that this is true. By doing so, they have undermined public confidence in the very systems that allow the public to exercise political power.
There is great strength in the fact that our elections are not centralized and take place independently at the local level. Our poll workers are our neighbors and live in our communities, and we can trust that they will carry out our election cooperatively and with integrity, as they have done in the past. Recent history shows America’s elections systems and processes are secure, making the opportunity to choose our government leaders possible.
Our elections have long been the envy of the free world. Current research demonstrates that these elections continue to be secure, without significant instances of fraud. We rely on a system of checks and balances that allows candidates for office to peacefully seek redress through the courts if they suspect any discrepancies. Unfortunately, some candidates will use this process to promote disinformation through the media. This is confusing and frustrating to voters. However, the established justice system consistently upholds the truth that our elections are fair.
Increasingly high voter turnout in presidential elections suggests the importance American voters place on this civic duty. We encourage all to vote and to trust in the results of the elections. As a reflection of our responsibilities as citizens, we should all agree to peacefully accept the results of elections. Regardless of which individuals and parties win, as an organization we will support our members as they actively participate in democracy. They will continue to help grow an informed and principled citizenry, engaging with elected officials and expecting members of the media, elected officials, and candidates to be honest about election results.
The members of MWEG maintain hope in the promises of this nation and the moral capacity of its citizens. We are committed to ethical government, respecting and loving our fellow citizens, and peacemaking.
