Official Statement from Mormon Women for Ethical Government in Response to the Supreme Court’s 5-4 Decision to Uphold Travel Ban

June 26, 2018

As members of Mormon Women for Ethical Government, we are deeply disappointed and dismayed at today’s Supreme Court ruling upholding the latest iteration of the Trump administration’s travel ban. We believe there are multiple factors that make this travel ban unprecedented, and we cannot discount or ignore the greater context in which the ban was issued. Therefore, we feel we must take this opportunity to speak out against any policies or practices rooted in animus towards Muslims.

God’s parenthood of all humankind makes us literal sisters and brothers. We are one family. As Russell M. Nelson, our current living prophet, said only recently, “That understanding inspires us with a passionate desire to build bridges of understanding instead of walls of segregation.”

Knowing that anti-Muslim sentiments and even acts of violence against Muslims have increased markedly across our nation in recent months, we wish to raise our voices in increased affection for and protection of our peace-loving Muslim neighbors. In so doing, we join in chorus with the late Mormon apostle and prophet, Neal A. Maxwell, who said, “Mutual respect, friendship, and love are precious things in today’s world. We feel those emotions for our Islamic brothers and sisters. Love . . . crosses over all borders and links generations and cultures.”

Along with these prophets of God, we call on women and men everywhere to be proactive in taking up their tools today to tear down walls of separation and begin building bridges of love and understanding.
