Official Statement from Mormon Women for Ethical Government Calling for the Peaceful and Lawful Removal of President Trump from Office

Our relationship to our government and to each other is one of civic covenant. That covenant is fragile, but it is the moral heart of our nation. At the core of that covenant is our sworn allegiance to the Constitution, the sacred right to vote, and a determination to uphold the rule of law. This structure of accountability has allowed our nation to maintain a continuing democracy for over 200 years. 

As an organization, we have repeatedly spoken out in defense of our civic covenant; given the recent events in Washington, we once again feel called to speak out against those leaders who would betray it for personal gain. 

We solemnly join the rising tide of voices asking for the peaceful and lawful removal of the president of the United States. He has fostered enmity among citizens and has replaced fidelity to the rule of law with fidelity to his own power and interests. He has undermined faith in our elections, and, ultimately, he has failed to protect and defend the U.S. Congress. The president of the United States has abdicated his stewardship over our national well-being. 

Though President Trump’s term is nearly over, a failure to apply constitutionally available consequences to his historically egregious acts would set a precedent for future administrations of both parties that any presidential act is beyond accountability. It would permanently weaken our governing system, and we call on our elected and sworn leaders to act. 

Trump’s removal will not resolve the discord within our own hearts and homes. In a democracy, power flows from the people. In this moment of crisis, we must each hold ourselves to account, evaluating both our personal feelings toward our fellow citizens and the limits to our individual political loyalties. We must accept truth, seek leaders who respect us enough to do the same, and work together to rebuild a shared narrative of mutual trust and respect. 

As both leaders and citizens take responsibility for this moment, our thoughtful and courageous actions will strengthen national security, restore unity, and uphold our shared covenant. This is the work of peacemaking.
