Call to Action: Contact Your Elected Representatives About the Commutation of Roger Stone’s Sentence

On Friday, July 10, 2020, President Trump commuted the sentence of his longtime friend and advisor Roger Stone, who was convicted of federal crimes (seven felony counts, including obstructing a congressional investigation, tampering with a witness, and five counts of lying to Congress) and then sentenced to 40 months in prison. While this is within the legal bounds of the president’s powers, it is unethical and corrupt to abuse those powers to commute the sentence of someone convicted in an investigation into that president’s own campaign.  To do: Contact your members of Congress and ask them to call out this latest action for the self-serving corruption it is. In less…

Call to Action: Protect Democracy by Ensuring Government Oversight

On June 20 the president continued his pattern of weekend firings by unexpectedly terminating Geoffery Berman, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York. Berman had been overseeing many high-profile investigations, including one into President Trump’s personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani. Berman’s firing, while legal, did not follow regular norms and patterns. In conjunction with other recent firings, it raises questions about Trump’s repeated removal of government officials actively investigating claims against his administration and his associates. In April and May, President Trump fired five inspectors general, including those looking into allegations of impropriety at the State Department, Department of Defense, and Department of Health and Human Services. Congress has…

Call to Action: Investigate Inspectors General Firings

On May 15 President Trump fired the nonpartisan inspector general of the State Department. This is the fifth inspector general Trump has fired in the past two months. Trump’s firing of five inspectors general continues a pattern of behavior intended to shield the presidency from oversight and should be deeply troubling to all Americans. Congress must hold the Trump administration accountable for these unprecedented and unethical firings.  To Do: Contact your members of Congress to investigate these firings and ask that the investigations overseen by the terminated inspectors general continue unimpeded. In five minutes or less, submit a letter to all of your elected representatives at once via our website.…

Call to Action: Protect Our Democracy from Abuse of Power

The Department of Justice recently moved to end its case against former national security adviser Michael Flynn. Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his conversation with Russia’s ambassador that took place during the presidential transition. More than 2,000 DOJ alumni from across the political spectrum have spoken out against these actions by Attorney General (AG) Barr. This is only the second time these public servants have broken with longstanding tradition and joined as a group to criticize actions by the DOJ. The first was when AG Barr overruled the sentencing recommendation of career prosecutors to seek favorable treatment for President Trump’s close associate, Roger Stone. At that…

Call to Action: Full and Fair Impeachment Trial

As the impeachment trial begins in the Senate today, we reaffirm our position that anything less than a full and fair impeachment trial, including pertinent witnesses and evidence, will be a violation of oaths taken by U.S. senators. Early analysis of the rules set forth by the McConnell resolution is deeply troubling; they ignore established procedures for admitting evidence and calling witnesses. They are designed to hide rather than expose the truth. Because the resolution allows for dismissal at any time, without allowing for arguments or discussion, Senator McConnell has created a process designed to conceal truth and exonerate the president rather than to lay bare the truth and derive…

Be a Witness: Speak Out for a Full and Fair Impeachment Trial

UPDATE: Deadline extended to 5PM PT / 6PM MT / 7PM CT / 8PM ET.We are Republicans. We are Democrats. We are Independents and the unaffiliated. Our combined voices represent the majority of American voters, and we are frustrated by politicians who weaponize our two-party system as a means to consolidate and maintain political power. Hyperpartisanship makes enemies of fellow citizens and insulates leaders from the natural and legal consequences of their actions. When this happens, we all lose. There is a better way. We must come together and unitedly proclaim that our primary allegiance is to the nation we love. Then, as voters, we must demand the highest standards…
