Call to Action: Pray for the United States and Its Leaders

October 21, 2019 Follow the direct admonition of President M. Russell Ballard, who said: “I invite you to join in a new movement. Invite your neighbors, your colleagues, your friends on social media to pray for this country.” We support President Ballard, Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in this call and acknowledge his role as a watchman on the tower. Sustained and focused prayer is not passive. It not only calls down the power of heaven, it also focuses our own attention, softens our hearts, opens us to specific inspiration, and motivates our noblest actions. INTRODUCTION: Yesterday,…

Llamado Urgente a la Acción para el Reasentamiento de Refugiados

To read this post in English, click here.

    Call to Action: GRACE Act

Para leer esta publicación en inglés, haga clic aquí. The Guaranteed Refugee Admission Ceiling Enhancement (GRACE) Act is critical legislation to ensure the successful resettling of refugees seeking a safe haven in the United States. These refugees have already been selected by the UN Refugee Agency. The GRACE Act sets a required resettlement floor (meaning an admissions minimum) of 95,000 refugees. This number better reflects the United States’ historical threshold for accepting refugees and shows a flexible response to the drastic rise in refugees worldwide. President Trump announced his plan to set the refugee ceiling (meaning an admissions maximum) for 2020 at an all-time low of 18,000. In addition, cities and…

    Media Literacy: Evaluating News Sources

The internet has provided a deluge of news websites, and new ones pop up all the time. As we seek to understand what’s happening in our world and how we can make it a more ethical place, it’s important to know how to distinguish which news sites are reputable and which viewpoints they represent. Here are five questions we should ask in the process:  What kind of media site is this? Is this content produced by independent journalists, a think tank, a political organization, or even a business? Articles produced to promote a business or think tank may not undergo the same journalistic standards as those produced by an independent…

The Global Problem of Plastic Waste — and How to Reduce It

Plastic production and consumption is a global problem. From 1950 to 2015, the world produced 8.3 billion tons of plastic. In 2015 alone, the production of plastic was 380 million metric tons. Of all this plastic, over half was designed to be used only once then discarded. Most of this plastic does not get recycled. The rate of plastic recycling from 1950 to 2015 was only 6%, and despite significant gains, the recycling rate in 2015 was only 20%. Further, much of the recycling of plastic waste from the U.S. is diverted to other countries, many of which are unable to manage their own waste or do not want it.…
