Official Statement From Mormon Women for Ethical Government on New Asylum Rule and in Defense of Fair and Just Policy Solutions

July 16, 2019 Yesterday the Trump administration published a new rule designed to end most asylum protections for migrants arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border. The administration claims this action is necessary in order to stop the flow of migrants, but the change certainly violates the spirit of asylum and is likely illegal under both U.S. law and international conventions.Ā  Mormon Women for Ethical Government recognizes that our nation is suffering real consequences as a result of poor public policy surrounding human migration and immigration. However, we feel a moral imperative to sound a watchword following the intensification of defamatory language and uptick in extra-legal policies produced by the President and…

Official Statement From Mormon Women for Ethical Government on Unethical Policing Practices by the Woods Cross Police Department

June 7, 2019 Yesterday, in West Bountiful, Utah, a police officer who was involved in a multi-agency manhunt for two adult suspects stopped his vehicle and drew his firearm on a 10-year-old black child who was playing in his front yard. The officer ordered the child at gunpoint to get on the ground before determining that he did not fit the description of the suspects and quickly leaving without further explanation. The incident was witnessed in part by the child’s mother, who ran outside to the child’s defense. A lieutenant with the Woods Cross Police Department dismissed this as ā€œan unfortunate situationā€ in which the boy was ā€œin the wrong…

Official Statement From Mormon Women for Ethical Government on the Victimization of Children in Our Broken Immigration System

June 6, 2019 Last week, the Acting Inspector General released a report recommending that the Department of Homeland Security take immediate action to address the dangerous and inhumane treatment of detainees, including family units and unaccompanied minors, at a border patrol processing center in El Paso, Texas. On Monday, we learned that 37 migrant children between the ages of five and twelve were kept in vans in the sweltering Texas heat last July for between 23-39 hours, depending on the child, while waiting to be processed for reunification with their parents. This happened after public outrage forced the administration to backpedal on its inhumane zero-tolerance policy that led to thousands…

April 22, 2019 We are filled with deep sorrow as we once again respond to the devastating loss of life motivated by religious hatred and bigotry, this time affecting hundreds of our fellow Christians and others throughout Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday. We offer our most heartfelt condolences and prayers to all those who have lost loved ones in these horrific attacks. We also pray for the law enforcement and medical professionals responding to these attacks and for the lives and health of those who have been injured. For followers of Jesus Christ, Easter is the holy day on which we rejoice in Jesus Christ’s resurrection, His ultimate triumph over death…

Official Statement From Mormon Women for Ethical Government on the Conclusion of the Mueller Investigation

March 23, 2019 As our nation awaits news on the contents and conclusions of the Mueller report, we remind Attorney General William P. Barr of his stated commitment to transparency. Politicians and pundits on both sides of the aisle have politicized this investigation in ways that served their own purposes while further dividing the American people. Now Attorney General Barr has the opportunity to prevent further disunity and distrust by releasing a full declassified version of the report to Congress and the American public. We urge our fellow citizens of every political persuasion to resist the efforts of those who would benefit from continued division and suspicion. We must put…

Official Statement From Mormon Women for Ethical Government on the Tragic Religious Persecution and Violence in Christchurch, New Zealand

March 15, 2019 Less than six months ago, we mourned the tragic deaths of our sisters and brothers of the Jewish faith whose lives were taken at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Today, our hearts are broken again by the loss of more of God’s children due to hatred and prejudice–our sisters and brothers of the Muslim faith in Christchurch, New Zealand. We are pained that we must repeat our same expression of deepest sorrow, anguish, and righteous indignation on behalf of those whose lives have been lost or threatened, as well as their families and loved ones. In civil society, there is absolutely no place for…
