An Open Letter to Montana Senators on Federal Refugee Funding from the Montana Chapter of MWEG

Dear Senators,

On behalf of the Montana Chapter of Mormon Women for Ethical Government, we strongly encourage you to reinstate the federal pass-through funding for the refugee resettlement program in HB2.

Federal pass-through funding for the refugee resettlement program is beneficial to the state. This funding does not incur costs for the state of Montana. It contributes to healthy communities through job creation and funding in the areas of health and human services, education, and housing. When refugee communities benefit, the state benefits as well.

Montana has a history of welcoming displaced people since the ’70s, when the state welcomed Hmong families who had helped the United States during the Vietnam War. Montanans have continued that tradition by welcoming new neighbors from Eritrea, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Syria. We want this to continue.

Refugees are the most vetted group of people to enter the U.S. Each person applying for refugee status receives extensive background checks, biometric screening, and interviews by multiple U.S. and national agencies. Resettled refugees add to our communities by paying taxes, increasing spending power, working essential jobs, and opening small businesses. They also contribute socially and enrich our lives as our friends and neighbors within our faith groups and social circles.

Refugees are mothers, fathers, children, grandparents, and spouses. We believe all human beings are mutually accountable to each other. Our country is filled with opportunities to share with our brothers and sisters seeking refuge here, especially as they give back more than they receive. Montanans want the unique richness that refugees bring here. We are called to fulfill this moral duty and receive this opportunity to welcome refugees into our state and local communities.

Please continue to support refugees in Montana by reinstating the federal pass-through funds for the refugee resettlement program.

Sincerely,
The Montana Chapter of Mormon Women for Ethical Government
